A review of one of Liverpool’s most iconic and well known Mediterranean restaurants, Christakis! Find out what I thought of my experience.
AD – Gifted Meal
Today’s post is for all those Liverpool City dwellers out there, or those looking for a restaurant recommendation for an up and coming trip. I was kindly invited down to Christakis in Aigburth a few weeks ago to try their menu, the meal was gifted, however all opinions are my own.
If you aren’t from Liverpool, or the surrounding areas, then you are unlikely to have heard of Christakis. First and foremost, Christakis is a well-known, borederline famous, Greek restuarant across two sites in Liverpool. One of the restaurants is located in the heart of the city centre on Duke Street, and the other on Aigburth Road (the restaurant I was invited down to). Christakis also has a residency in the Baltic Market, located in the Baltic Triangle area of the city.
Christakis is the perfect setting for any special occasion, with weekend belly dancing shows in the Duke Street restaurant you will most definitely be entertained.
What did I order?
Hummus (v/gf) – Creamed chickpeas with tahini, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. Served with a side of warm fresh bread.
Spinach Pie (v) – Greek savoury filo pastry filled with spinach, onions, herbs and feta cheese.
Chicken Kebab – Skewers of marinated pieces of tender chicken. Served with chips, rice and salad.
Kleftico (gf) – Shoulder of lamb braised in the oven with tomatoes, onions, celery and herbs. Served with chips. rice and salad.
Baklava (v)– Sweet filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup.
Christakis Aigburth Road Review
Greek/Mediterranean food is becoming one of my favourite cuisines at the moment, I have always loved it, but lately I just can’t get enough. Christakis encompasses my love for Greek food all under one roof, and will be one of my go to restaurants when I’m looking to satisfy my craving.
Hummus is a staple dish in my diet, I’m always purchasing it when I do the weekly food shop. Paired with pitta and veggies it’s the perfect starter or lunch time snack. I obviously had to get this on my visit to Christakis, and I was not disappointed. It was creamy and delicious, the warm bread was soft and accompanied the hummus really well.
The Spinach Pie was new to me, and I’m so glad I tried this out. The pastry was perfectly crispy, and the dish was super savoury, everything I love about a starter.
Believe me when I tell you that the Chicken Kebab was the nicest kebab I have ever eaten in my almost 26 years of life! I know that sounds dramatic, but it truly was a taste and texture sensation. The chicken was juicy, tender and flavoursome. I loved every mouthful and would get this dish again and again. If you go to Christakis, you MUST get this meal.
My boyfriend decided on the Kleftico. Personally, Lamb isn’t a dish that I would usually opt for, however I had to give this a try and it was unreal! The meat literally fell of the bone, and the tomato based sauce was to die for!
This was my first time trying Baklava, and I am now fully obsessed! I can barely walk past a bakery without wanting to purchase a whole bunch of Baklava. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, then you probably wouldn’t enjoy this. However, as self confessed sweet lover, I adored every bite. It’s sticky, chewy and sweet, and is now one of my new favourite desserts.
If you have never visited Christakis before, then you need to get yourself down there ASAP. The food is incredible and the staff are wonderful. The staff made the experience even better by being attentive, giving food recommendations, polite, funny and charming. I can’t wait until my next meal at Christakis!
My experience of the Estrid razor got off to a rocky start. Featuring razor burn, bumps and rashes. Read on to hear my full thoughts on the Estrid Razor and if my opinion was turned around…
Hello blogging world! It’s been a while since I last shared a post on my website. Firstly, I want to apologise for the radio silence. I don’t have an excuse for where I’ve been over the last couple of months, other than I wasn’t feeling particularly inspired, or motivated to post. Life hasn’t been hectic or anything, but I am back to working in the office a couple of days per week, so the last thing I wanted to do was write blog posts of an evening. I hope I can get back into the swing of things, but don’t plan on setting myself any major blogging goals, I don’t want to overwhelm my little brain just yet. Anyway, I’m rambling a bit now, so I’m going to get on with why you are actually here. To read my opinion on Hey Estrid.
Disclosure – this isn’t an AD, I purchased the razor with my own money. I thought I’d share this as I know quite a few bloggers have worked with Estrid previously, and I don’t want people to think I’m not disclosing any gifted/paid collaborations.
Who are Estrid?
If you have lived under a rock for the last couple of years, you may not have heard of Estrid. Estrid is a razor subscription for those who want to remove their body hair. The razors are designed with 5 sharp blades, to give you the smoothest/closest shave possible. Estrid are a vegan and cruelty free brand, they don’t use any animal by products and test on humans, not animals.
The Estrid subscription service is tailored to your shaving needs. If you shave every day, a few times per week, or once a week, Estrid has a plan that will suit you. I personally shave a couple of times per week, so my replacement blades are sent out every 2 months.
When you sign up to Estrid for the first time, you can choose the colour of the razor you would like. There are so many different colours to select, including: Matcha (green), Bloom (light pink), Cloud (grey), Space (lialic/blue), Peach, Lemonade (yellow). I opted for Lemonade.
Estrid Razor Review
I had high hopes for the Estrid razor, having seen so many bloggers, influencers and YouTubers talking about how this razor was going to change my life. I debated with myself for so long, before finally deciding to subscribe. The razor I was using at the time just wasn’t doing it for me, so a shaving switch up was required.
Firstly, the order process online was very easy and user friendly. The steps were short and simple, no complicated, long winded questionaires to complete, just a couple of quickfire questions to determine the right plan for me. My starter kit arrived within a few days of ordering and delivery is free.
The razor itself is weighty and of high quality. I could definitely tell the difference between the Estrid razor component, compared with the my usual razor. The Estrid starter kit comes with a handy holder that sticks to the wall, preventing me from forgetting to take it into the shower with me.
The first time I used the Estrid Razor, I made sure to lather my legs up with plenty of shower gel before proceeding with shaving. I must admit, I was impressed by how smooth the blades glided along my skin, but within a few moments I noticed that I’d developed a small cut on my leg. This rarely happened with my old razor, so I was quite surprised when this occured.
After my shower, I always put on some form of body lotion or moisturiser. After applying, my legs started to sting like crazy and after around 20-30 minutes I noticed a shaving rash and small bumps to my legs. Obviously I was really disappointed about this, but didn’t want to make a negative judgement on the Estrid razor too soon.
My initial experience of the Estrid razor certainly wasn’t what I expected it to be. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and decided to continue using it. I shaved under my arms with the razor, again with plenty of soap. In the middle of the night I was woken up by a really panful itching armpit. When I looked at this in the mirror, I noticed a similar shaving rash to what appeared on my legs. Considering how much hype the brand and products were receiving across social media, I was quite shocked that I was experiencing this.
The next few times I was shaving, I made sure to exfoliate the areas beforehand and added even more body wash to assist the razor glide across my skin. I did notice a difference this time, no cuts, no stinging, just smooth shaved legs. I’ve clearly been doing it wrong the entire time! I don’t want to sound as though I’m exaggerating, but my legs genuinely feel like a dolphins back after shaving, so shiny, so smooth. I’m starting to understand the hype now. For my under arms, I followed the same preparation routine as I had done for my legs. However, I also used a lighter hand when shaving, used less shaving strokes and was extra gentle when tackling this area. Finally, I have cracked it! No more razor burn on my arm pits anymore.
At first I was so disappointed, but now I am well and truly obsessed. I feel like there’s a technique to shaving with this razor, more preparation is required then other razors I’ve used, but the effort truly is worth it for the end result.
Did you experience any of the same issues with the Estrid razor like I did? What are your true and honest thoughts on the Estrid Razor?
Luxury jewellery isn’t always expensive, you can find beautiful high-quality pieces without the designer price tag. Enter the world of Slide Jewels.
AD – paid partnership, also contains gifted items.
Jewellery is the beating heart of every fashionista’s wardrobe. Jewellery makes an outfit go from drab to fab, and it doesn’t need to break the bank either. Luxury jewellery isn’t always expensive, you can find beautiful high-quality pieces without the designer price tag. Enter the world of Slide Jewels.
About the Brand
Slide Jewels are a premium Jewellery brand. All of their jewellery is made from stainless steel and 18k gold plating. This means the pieces will not tarnish or become discoloured when wet, so are guaranteed to stay in tip top condition for years, (their rings are made of brass, so take care when washing your hands). Finding jewellery either for yourself of a loved one is often a difficult task; however, Slide Jewels have a large range of Necklaces, Rings, Bracelets and Earrings making your search for the perfect piece easier than ever. With gold and silver options, you will find plenty of gorgeous jewels to add to your jewellery box.
Not only do Slide Jewels have the most beautiful Jewellery, they are also helping to reduce their carbon footprint by using cardboard packaging instead of plastic. The simplest change can have a huge impact on helping our planet.
As you all know, there are subscription services for just about everything, from makeup to pets, there is something for everyone. Slide Jewels have their very own monthly Jewellery subscription box, how fab does that sound! The HONEY monthly jewellery box is £39.99 per month and is delivered straight to your door every 30 days. Each box contains an item of gold or silver plated jewellery, typically a bracelet or necklace. The packaging is reusable, and the jewels are supposed to come with a certificate of authenticity, so you know you are receiving genuine gold. Subscription boxes always feel like you’re getting a present every month, you could either treat yourself, or gift the HONEY box to your friend. Slide Jewels also have a ring monthly subscription box, called BABY. These are limited in stock so are very popular among jewellery fanatics.
The quality of the jewellery is lovely, the pieces feel and look a lot more expensive than they actually are. One of my favourite items is the snake ring, it has beautiful green jewels for the eyes, and a sleek gold body. I don’t believe you can choose the size of the ring, my hands are quite small, but the ring only fits comfortably on my ring finger, it would be a bit of a squeeze on any of my other fingers.
I think Slide Jewels would make the perfect present for a loved one, especially with Mother’s Day just around the corner here in the UK. Their ‘More Self Love’ engraved necklace is stunning, along with their choker necklace. They could be layered together or worn alone, both options would look really elegant.
I pride myself in being honest with my readers, so I must admit that shipping was very slow. After looking online, this seems to be an issue that a lot of buyers have experienced. Therefore, I’d bare this in mind if you see something you’d like, plan your purchase well in advance of an event or occasion so your order arrives on time.
Overall, I’m obsessed with all of the jewellery I’ve received and couldn’t fault the quality. I shared an unboxing reel over on my Instagram, which gives you an insight into everything from the packaging to the jewellery itself. Are you gravitating towards any of the pieces?
If Valentine’s Day isn’t the perfect excuse to watch trashy rom-com movies then I really don’t know what is. Whether you’re looking for something to watch with your partner, or friends, this romance movie list should contain plenty of options to keep you entertained.
We all know that the 90’s was the best era for teen romance movies, they certainly don’t make movies like that anymore. As a 90’s baby myself, I love nothing more than to watch throwback chick flicks from the decade I was born. My romance movie guide will contain ALOT of 90’s and noughties classic movies.
Must-Watch Rom Com Movies
1. Clueless – 1995
If this movie doesn’t encapsulate the 90’s in 1hr 30mins then I don’t know what will, and if you have never seen it, then you’ve been living under a rock for the past 26 years! Clueless follows Cher, a teenager who is navigating adolescent problems. Cher is an absolute QUEEN and has the best fashion sense, I would still love to have that famous yellow blazer and skirt duo. The movie is hilarious and has plenty of laugh out moments…AS IF! I’ve watched Clueless countless times and it just never gets old, it is a timeless classic in my opinion.
2. 10 Things I Hate About You – 1999
I was introduced to this movie when I was 17, I genuinely couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of it until that point! Heath Ledger stars alongside Julia Stiles in this romantic comedy that will leave an unforgettable imprint in your mind. I love this movie so much, not just because Heath Ledger was casted. I won’t give anything away, because you truly need to sit down and watch for yourself.
3. How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days – 2003
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are the main protagonists in this delightful rom-com. Wikipedia’s brief overview of the movie doesn’t give too much away, but with all rom-coms you can figure out the plot within the first few minutes of the movie. “Benjamin is challenged by his co-workers to make a woman fall in love with him. On the other hand, Andie has to write an article on how to lose a man in 10 days.” There are plenty of laugh out loud moments in this one, I think it would be the perfect watch on Valentine’s Day.
4. Valentine’s Day – 2010
How could I write a Valentine’s movie guide and not include the actual film Valentine’s Day. This movie has a star studded cast, including, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Gardiner, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway and Taylor Swift, with some other big names making an appearance too. “On Valentine’s Day, several couples face struggles related to their love lives while others try their best to find love. However, they try to overcome the challenges to make things work.” I really like this movie, I think it’s the perfect film to watch as a couple. It has it’s classic rom-com cheesiness, but I think the male population might appreciate this more than some of the other movies I’ve mentioned.
5. Romeo and Juliet – 1996
I must admit, the last time I watched Romeo and Juliet was back in School for my GCSE’s. I won’t bore you with the details because everyone knows the storyline. Baz Luhrmann’s modern take on Romeo and Juliet is a movie masterpiece, the only thing I don’t like is that the script is spoken in Shakespearean English, making it rather difficult to follow. That being said, the movie is trying to play homage to the plays original roots, whilst also keeping up with modern times.
6. The Fault in Our Stars – 2014
Of course you will have heard of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The movie staring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort is a heart wrenching tear jerker, that follows two teenagers with cancer. Although a morbid story, the way the characters love for each other blossoms throughout the movie is so romantic. If you plan to watch it this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to stock up on the tissues!
7. The Shape of Water – 2017
I went to see The Shape of Water with my boyfriend when it was out on the cinema. I wasn’t expecting to like it, but it turned out to be one of the best movies I’d seen, and my boyfriend completely agrees. The story follows ‘Elisa, a lonely janitor, stumbles upon an amphibious creature that is held captive in a secret research facility. She then develops a unique relationship with the creature.‘ It’s a romance/fantasy film which will captivate you from the get go.
8. Twilight – 2008
Another movie which I haven’t watched since I was a teenager, but one I might actually re-watch, especially since the whole movie franchise is on Netflix. If you didn’t already know, Twilight is a vampire/romance movie, that “focuses on the development of a personal relationship between teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and the subsequent efforts of Edward and his family to keep Bella safe from a separate group of hostile vampires”
9. Me Before You – 2016
Another tear jerker, but a movie that’s certainly worth watching. Based on the novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes, Louisa (Emila Clarke) takes on a new role caring for Will (Sam Claflin), a paralysed man. Their relationship soon blossoms into something beautiful. I went to see this in the cinema and sobbed my heart out!
10 – The Titanic – 1997
Why do I keep recommending movies that are going to make you cry, I’m not trying to make you sad, I promise!! The Titanic is of course a classic romance movie. Set aboard the doomed ship, the story follows Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) who form an unlikely romance. Jack and Rose are from different social classes, and at the time, it was frowned upon to fall in love outside of your own class, what a strange era!! I got to see this movie for the first time at the pictures, it was re-realised for either it’s 10th or 15th anniversary.
And so there you have it, my recommendations for the best romance movies to watch on Valentine’s Day as a couple. I really hope you like the movies that I’ve selected, I’m desperate to re-watch some of these cult classic movies now, especially 10 Things I Hate About You. If you like movie guides, I have a bunch of others on the blog, ranging from horror, Christmas movies, and even Disney+ recommendations. I always enjoy creating posts like these, as it allows me to reminisce on my favourite films. What are your favourite romance movies? I’d love to know!
I’m not one for splurging out on Valentine’s Day, I think we should celebrate our loved ones all year round, not just on the 14th February. However, it is always nice to share the love on Valentine’s Day, it’s the day of romance after all. In this post, I’ll be sharing some great gift ideas that can be enjoyed by anyone on Valentine’s Day 2022.

I worked with Jolie Beauty a year or so ago now, on a few of their campaigns. My favourite product being their Second Skin Powder Highlighters. The shade ‘Saintly’ is now a staple in my collection and I wear it the majority of the time I put on makeup. Jolie Beauty also have some lovely eyelashes and eyeshadow palettes which would also make wonderful Valentine’s Day gifts. All of their cosmetics are cruelty free too, which is a HUGE bonus. I’m also fully aware that the image below is Christmas themed, it’s from my post I did with them for the highlighter campaign.
Food and drink gift ideas
It wouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day Gift Guide without featuring some sort of sweet treat or alcohol based beverage now would it.
All Things Drinks
All Things Drinks are an online retailer specialising in alcohol. With a vast array of beer, wines and spirits, there really is a special gift for everyone. Not only that but they also have a non-alcoholic range, for those that like a clear head the next day. For Valentine’s Day, All Things Drinks have the perfect offer, a Cake and Bubbles Package. Choose from a bottle of Prosecco with two cake pots, or Prosecco and 4 cake pots, ranging from £30 – £50. You can even select your cake flavours too, these include: Berrylicious, Cocoa Crush, Lemon Lush and Rouge Bouge, how tasty do they all sound! The cakes are delivered separately to the Prosecco, as they are shipped from Sweet Cakey Thing bakery, and the Prosecco from All Things Drinks. All cakes are free-from wheat, dairy, gluten, grains, soya, additives, preservatives or refined sugar, covering a variety of dietary requirements.
Cook a fancy meal for your partner
If going out for food l isn’t on the cards this Valentine’s Day, then why not cook a nice meal for your partner. I know this isn’t really a ‘gift’ but it’s something that your other half would definitely love, especially if they are the chef in the household. If cooking isn’t your strongest suit, some supermarkets offer Valentine’s Day meal deals, which are super affordable, a lot cheaper than booking a table at a restaurant. I’ve had the M&S Valentine’s meal in the past, I think it’s around £20. It usually comes with a starter, main, side, dessert, wine (or soft drinks) and chocolates. Although we are no longer in lockdown, I created a list of Valentine’s date ideas in 2021, but they can still apply if you’re not planning to go out and about this year.

A family friendly trip/ adventure filled couples weekend
If you are a parent, then the likelihood of you having any alone time is very slim. Maybe you could include the kids this Valentine’s Day with a fun filled weekend to Center Parcs. Center Parcs isn’t just for family’s, my boyfriend and I have visited countless times as a couple. There’s so much to do, plenty of fun activities, and spaces to relax and unwind. I have a full post on my experience at Center Parcs Sherwood Forest in Nottingham.
Everyday Essentials gifts
Personally, I think gifting someone everyday essentials is really thoughtful. Picking out items that they use daily and creating a self-care/essentials hamper is a great gift. My mum does this for me every Christmas, and it always includes products such as tampons, nail polish remove, festive chocolates, skincare etc.
WUKA Period Underwear
The people at WUKAbelieve that periods should not cost the earth. This is a statement I can fully get behind. Sustainability and helping to keep our environment in tact is something that we should all strive to achieve. Making small changes, can have a huge beneficial impact on the world around us. WUKA specialise in sustainable period underwear, helping people who menstruate be more environmentally friendly. Every pair of WUKA is ethically crafted using sustainably sourced materials. Each pair can be reused again and again for over 2 years, replacing over 200 or more disposable pads & tampons. With a variety of styles and absorbencies, there is a style for everyone. I think WUKA would make the perfect self-care treat for yourself this Valentine’s Day. You are number 1, take the time to prioritise yourself and practice self-love, by investing in period underwear. They will save the planet and your wallet in the long run.
AffordableValentine’s Day Gifts
You don’t need to splash the cash to show someone that you love and appreciate them. I’ve created a short list of more affordable Valentine’s gifts for those on a tighter budget.
Make a photo album
Personalised gifts are often a crowd pleaser. I think creating a photo album of your favourite moments together as a couple (or friends) adds such a cute personal touch. Looking through old photographs is something I personally love to do. It’s easy to print photographs, there are plenty of websites to use to do this for you. Simply upload your favourite pictures, on some sites this can be done directly from your phone, and have them delivered to your address. I think some printers allow you to choose the type of paper they are printed on e.g. glossy or matte. Pick up a nice album and simply pop the pictures inside. You could even write a personalised note under each image, making the gift even more romantic.
Flowers and chocolates
Thoughtful gifts don’t have to be expensive. Pick up a bunch of your partners favourite flowers, or even a cute house plant to brighten up the home. Flowers and house plants can be bought at the majority of supermarkets, and often range from £3 – £15, depending on the size of the bouquet. You could also purchase a pretty vase/plant pot to display your gift. A tasty box of chocolates or a little hamper filled with sweet treats, are always a winner, in my eyes anyway.
I hope you’ve managed to find something that your better half will love this Valentine’s Day. I feel that all of the gifts I’ve mentioned would be perfect all year round, and I’d certainly like to be gifted everything I’ve mentioned at some point. Thank you to all the brands who reached out and wanted to take part, it really means a lot. Thank you to my lovely readers too, for always supporting me and my little blog!
I recently visited GPO Food Hall, situated in the heart of the City Centre within Liverpool’s Met Quarter. I wanted to share my experience to give you some itinerary inspiration for your next visit to Liverpool!
I’ve decided to start blogging more about my city, and the places to visit. Liverpool is a city that should be celebrated for its rich culture and vibrancy. Liverpool often gets a bad a name in the press, but I honestly don’t know why. It’s no more crime stricken that any other city in the country, and is full of friendly warm faces, ready to help wherever they can.
I recently visited GPO Food Hall, situated in the heart of the City Centre within Liverpool’s Met Quarter, with direct access on Victoria Street. When GPO opened it’s door I was desperate to get down there, and in January I finally did. GPO features 11 different independent kitchens, with over 400 dishes to choose from. The menu’s encompass different cuisines from around the world. There is definitely something to tantalise everyone’s taste buds, even the fussy eaters!
The Food Hall is decorated in a modern style, with plants and greenery throughout. I wish I had taken some photographs of the interior, as it’s so beautifully presented. GPO also doubles up as an office space. At just £5 you will have access to unlimited coffee, discounts on all retailers, power outlets for laptop chargers, and no obligation to spend to stay. That sounds like a great deal, I’d love to take advantage of it one day.
The ordering system in GPO is perfect. Each table has a QR code to scan, which takes you to an online ordering app. You can pay by card and the food/drink will be delivered to your table as soon as it’s ready. You even earn points when you spend, to instantly get discounts on the traders, I thought this was a great idea.
When I visited GPO, we ordered from 3 traders in total. I’d love to go back this year to sample the goods from the other traders too, as they all looked and sounded delicious!
Jailbird Fried Chicken
The first meal we opted for was from Jailbird. Jailbird serve up Nashville Fried Chicken with your choice of heat level. The meal we went with was the Large Boneless Meal for £11, this includes: 3 chicken strips, 2 thighs on sliced bread with pickles and a side of waffle fries. I picked the hot heat level, but there wasn’t much heat at all really, I didn’t find it spicy and neither did my boyfriend. Despite the lack of spice, the chicken was still full of flavour, crispy and tasty. The waffle fries were actually my favourite part of the meal, it took me back to eating Chick-Fil-A in Texas a few years ago. I thought the addition of the sliced bread was a little unusual, so didn’t end up eating it, but I suppose you could make a fried chicken sandwich out of it.
The previous meal was very filling, but we still wanted to sample the goods from some other traders. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with Chinese food, rice tends to be the staple ingredient in our diets! We decided on some Dim Sum plates and shared them between us. We had Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls, Sesame Prawn Toast, and BBQ Pork Buns (Char Sui Buns). The Prawn Toast was the star of the show, it was genuinely the best Prawn Toast I have ever eaten! It was the perfect ratio of everything, 2 slices weren’t enough, I’d have devoured the whole plate if I had no self control! The BBQ Pork Buns were sweet and savoury, just how I like them. I’d definitely try some of Hee Kee’s other dishes, as they all sounded incredible. 10/10 from me!
I am a massive dessert lover, I love anything chocolatey and sweet. I couldn’t resist and just had to have a Milk Chocolate and Strawberry Crepe, after spotting another diners order. The melted chocolate was warm and delicious, and completely satisfied my sweet tooth. ICE also have an array of Ice Cream Sundaes, Brownies, Blondies and Milkshakes too.
The GPO Bar
The bar at GPO has a variety of drinks, including plenty of draught beers, cocktails and spirits. We did notice that the beers are not pints, so bare that in mind for pricing when ordering. Unfortunately the drinks menu doesn’t appear to be available online in full, so I can’t list the cocktails that I had, but both were really good.
Overall, my experience at GPO was perfect. I’d love to go back again and try some different food and drink. The atmosphere was great, full of laughter and chatter. Staff were attentive and friendly, and the overall surroundings were very classy. If you’re unsure on what you fancy for tea, give GPO a try, because I’m sure there will be something you’ll love.
Other traders include:
Chit‘N’ Chaat – Indian street food
Konjö – Japanese street food
Hee Thai Sawadee – Thai street food
Carousel Cheese Co. –Liverpool’s first rotating cheese carousel (think Yo! Sushi but with Cheese!!)
Nama – Fresh Fish
Patty B’s Burgers –Dirty Burgers
Monkeyboard Coffee – Fresh Coffee
ALS Gongcha – Authentic Taiwanese ‘Bubble Tea’
The next time you’re in Liverpool, don’t forget to add GPO to your itinerary!
A round up of the books I hope to check off my TBR list in 2022. Books from varying genres, fiction and non-fiction.
Last year I set myself a Goodreads challenge of reading 10 books in 2021, but unfortunately I didn’t acheive that. I was a bit gutted, but my house renovations took over my life, so it’s not that I didn’t have a valid reason for the lack of reading. But I did read a book, which has become one of my most favourite reads of all time, I think it’s even changed my life to some extent.
Anyway, I’ve set myself the same target again this year. I know 10 books might not seem like a lot to some of you, but anything is a start. I wanted to share the books I plan to read this year, hopefully to give you some inspiration on your next read, and to start up a conversation about some great books.
Book 1 – The Keeper of Lost Things
This is the book I’m currently reading, I picked this up last year at an Age UK Charity Shop on Allerton Road in Liverpool. Although second hand, it looks as though it was never read by its previous owner, the spine is completely in tact.
“Anthony Peardew has spet his life collecting lost objects, trying to atone for a promise broken many years before.
Realsing he is running out of time, he leaves his house and all his lost treasures to his assistant Laura, the one person he can trust to reunite the thousands of objects with their rightful owners
But the final wishes of the ‘Keeper of Lost Things’ have unforeseen reprecussions which trigger a most serendiptous series of encounters.”
The blurb intrigued me, although different to the books I would normally gravitate towards. I’m usually drawn to crime fiction, but wanted to branch out and discover other genres that I may grow to love.
Book 2 – The Diary of a Young Girl
This book needs no introduction, and is a book I’ve wanted to read for many years. I visited Amsterdam a few years ago, and took a trip to the Anne Frank Museum. I’ve always been interested in reading Anne Franks Diary, but have never gotten around to it. I bought the book for my boyfriend a number of years ago, and I think it’s about time I delve into the life of this brave young girl.
Book 3 – The Beekeeper of Aleppo
I think I heard about this book through a blogger, I forget who, but I instantly added to my Goodreads list. The book sounds like it will be a difficult read, not in the sense that I won’t enjoy it, but that the story will be upsetting.
“Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo–until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain.“
Book 4 – The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Over the past 12 months, I’ve witnessed many bookish bloggers talk about this novel, which has only piqued my interest even further. Another story which is different to anything I have read before, but definitely a book that sounds like it has many twists and turns throughout its pages.
“Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?“
Book 5 – The Silent Patient
Out of all the books I have already mentioned, this is the one that screams out to me the most. A mystery crime thriller set in London. I think this will be a page turner that I won’t be able to put down, leaving me wanting more and hanging onto every word.
“Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.“
Book 6 – The Flat Share
The Flat Share seems to be a cult favourite throughout the blogging community, and one I’m yet to get my teeth into. The story has over 4 stars on Goodreads, which is a good indication of how good the book is. The genre is romance and contemporary fiction, again, swaying out of my confort zone. But the story sounds like it will be a barrel of laughs and heartwarming to say the least.
“Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash. Their friends think they’re crazy, but it’s the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy’s at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time.
But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven’t met yet, they’re about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window…“
I have more than 6 books on my Goodreads list, however these are the main culprits that I really want to check off my TBR pile this year. I hope to add/read more throughout 2022, and would love to hear your recommendations. Have I mentioned any of your favourite books in my 2022 book round up?
We all know that January is the most miserable and mundane month of the year. I’m sharing some tips that should help give your mood a boost this January.
We all know that January is the most miserable and mundane month of the year. Everyone starts with the best of intentions, the ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude. But by the second or third week of January, the lack of motivation and enthusiasm starts to kick in. The comedown after the Christmas festivities is always difficult and the thought of the normal routine returning, is enough to put anyone of their breakfast.
Happiness Tips for January
1. Get outside
Being outside, in the fresh air is always a mood booster. No matter how much you can’t be bothered, or how lazy you’re feeling, a quick walk around your local park, coffee in hand will instantly make you feel better. Going for a winter walk is something I have been craving recently, I tested positive for covid just after New Year so was stuck inside for the first week of the year. One of the first things I did on ‘freedom day’ was head to Sefton Park for little walk. It perked me up and improved my mood straightaway.
2. Read a feel-good book
Reading isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but when I find a great book, the only thing I want to do is read. Find a book that will make you feel happy, not something that will leave a grey cloud above your head. The first books that spring to mind to me, are all by Matt Haig, sorry I know some of you are not too keen on his writing style. The Humans, How to Stop Time and The Midnight Library are some of my favourites. Another book that I’ve heard good things about is The Comfort Book, which is filled with inspirational and comforting quotes to better your mood.
3. Bake a cake or cook your favourite meal
One of my favourite things to do when I’m feeling down is to bake. I find baking to be cathartic and relaxing, although I haven’t done much of it recently. An account I follow on Instagram for baking inspiration is Jane’s Patisserie, my friend also gifted me her cook book for my birthday last year. Jane always share incredibly tasty recipes for sweet treats over on her Instagram and blog, and she often appears on This Morning, sharing her culinary delights.
4. Enjoy a pamper morning/evening
Run yourself a hot bubble bath or have a warm shower using your favourite body products. Do a full body scrub, shave (if that’s your jam), and cover your body in thick lotions and potions for a full on pamper. Wind down with a face mask to suit your skins needs, whether that’s a clay mask to remove impurities, or a hydrating gel or sheet mask for added moisture.
5. Treat yourself to something you love
Diet culture is toxic in January, fad diets are pushed through social media and the tabloids relentlessly. If you’re not feeling quite yourself, don’t restrict the things you love. Buy that cake, enjoy your favourite chocolate. It doesn’t have to be food related either, go get a manicure or pedicure. Purchase that new highlighter, or bag you’ve been after for ages. Treat yourself, because it will definitely make you feel good.
Exercise isn’t something I particularly enjoy, especially going to the gym! However, I’ve recently discovered my love for swimming, and before Christmas I started going a couple of times per week. I always feel proud when I’ve completed a swim session, especially when I’ve beaten my previous record. If cardio exercise isn’t for you, try stretching or yoga. Exercise is hard but the endorphins and the feeling of accomplishment after are worth it.
Meditation is a great way of helping to keep our minds calm and in the present. It’s particularly useful during anxious or stressful periods. There are lots of meditation apps around, such as Calm and Headspace, but there are also a bunch of free guided meditation videos on YouTube. Meditation takes practice, and you won’t be perfect at it instantaneously. Set aside just 5-10 minutes during your day, to have a moment of peace.
The 7 mood-boosting tips I’ve mentioned may not work for everyone, but they work wonders for me and my mental health, they’re easy and accessible to everyone. If you feel that your mental health is getting worse, I had a guest blogger write a blog post about depression that you might find useful. The charity Mind has information and support to help those struggling with their mental health.
I may be a little late to the party with Christmas content this year, so I’m quickly thrashing out a festive post to grace your feeds. This year I’ve been watching a bunch of Christmas movies to get myself in the festive spirit, particularly on Netflix. If you’re anything like me, I can take hours to decide which film to watch, to the point where I won’t end up watching anything at all. However, I’ve decided not to be as picky this year with my movie choices, and have watched whatever I thought might appeal.
I have put together a quick round up of festive movies to watch on Netflix this Christmas, which are sure to get you in the seasonal spirit. The list is in no particular order by the way!
1. The Holiday
I know, I know, The Holiday is on every Christmas movie recommendation list. But I watched it again a couple of weeks ago, and completely fell in love with the characters and story all over again. I mentioned this in a Christmas movie round-up last year too. It’s such a great festive feel-good rom-com that never fails to give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. It’s such a well thought out and quirky movie, that I just had to add. No movie Christmas list would be complete without The Holiday.
I watched this movie for the first time last week and laughed out loud throughout. The story follows Emma Roberts as Sloane and Luke Bracey as Jackson, who start off as complete strangers. They decide to become each others Holidate for the year, meaning any holiday e.g. valentines day, St. Patricks Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas etc. they will spend it together, to avoid being alone. I won’t give too much away, but the plot is hysterical, crude and hopelessly romantic, so is perfect to watch over Christmas.
3. Love Hard
A new Netflix Original movie with Nina Dobrev as the main star. It was strange seeing Nina portraying anyone other than Elena Gilbert and her doppelgangers in the Vampire Diaries, but is definitely a must watch! Nina is a dating blogger for an online magazine and shares her disastrous dates with her following. She meets a young, handsome guy on a dating app, and after a couple of weeks of chatting, she decides to surprise him for Christmas. However, to her astonishment, she has been catfished! After some convincing, Nina agrees to pretend to date the guy who catfished her for the the festive period, so he can impress his family. Similar to the Holidate, I laughed on so many occasions and the movie just put me in a great mood. This will be on my movie watch list for years to come!
4. Last Christmas
If you love Wham’s iconic Christmas song, Last Christmas, then you will certainly enjoy the movie with the same name. The film features multiple George Michael classics throughout, with him being the main antagonists favourite musician. Last Christmas is set in the heart of London (no pun intended…if you’ve watched the movie, you’ll no what I mean), where a young girl works in an all-year round Christmas store dressed as an Elf, meets a handsome mysterious stranger. The cast includes Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson.
5. The Princess Switch
I watched this movie last year, followed by The Princess Switch (Switched Again), however I wouldn’t bother watching the latter, it’s terrible. The movie features Vanessa Hudgens as the main character(s), she plays 2 different people. Stacey DeNovo is a budding young baker who is entered into a baking competition in the Kingdom of Belgravia. During the trip, Stacey bumps into Lady Margaret Delacourt, who looks identical to her. Margaret suggests they switch lives for a couple of days, so she can take a break from the spotlight. I won’t go into much more detail, but I think I’ve covered the main plot here. I really enjoyed this movie, and might give the third film a try, but I don’t have high hopes as the second movie was awful.
6. Jack Frost
Jack Frost is a classic Christmas movie that we all know and love. It’s heart warming and tear jerking, so if you’ve never seen the movie before, make sure to have some tissues to hand, as you’re in for an a rollercoaster of emotions. A young boy sadly loses his Dad in a tragic car accident, but over Christmas, his Dad’s spirit is reincarnated into a Snowman! This movie has so many fun elements to it, but can be upsetting in parts.
7. Love Actually
Another Christmas movie that is on the majority of people’s festive watch lists. However, it isn’t usually on mine. I watched Love Actually many moons ago, but never understood the hype. I decided to give it another go this Christmas, to see if my opinion had changed… and it actually, sorry, has! I enjoyed it a lot more than when I first watched it, I certainly wouldn’t say it was my favourite Christmas movie, but it’s made it on to future lists!
And there you have it, a quick list of must watch festive movies for your Christmas break, all found on Netflix. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and 2022 is a much better year for us all!
AD – Decorating my first home has been an absolute dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I’ve created countless Pinterest boards for specific rooms around my house, filled with home decor ideas. In June of this year, I finally got the keys to my first home. So decorating and renovating has taken over my life and become my number one priority. A gallery wall is something I have always wanted to design and bring to life in my house. I think it adds a personal touch to the room, and creates a cosy, lived in atmosphere. When creating my gallery wall, I wanted to gather my prints from one site, rather than shopping around various online shops. This is where Poster Store come in! I was kindly gifted some of their posters and frames, and chose designs that I thought would compliment my home office/makeup room.
My home office is quite neutral, I didn’t want overbearing bright colours. Despite being an office, I wanted it to have a chic yet relaxing ambience, whilst also creating a chilled work friendly vibe. The posters I chose helped me to achieve this perfectly and take me to a place of calm, simply by admiring them. I had a bare wall above my desk for a few months, and the pictures have definitely brought some warmth and personality to the room.
Poster Store have a large selection of Scandinavian design prints and frames at affordable price points. Their website contains gallery wall inspiration, perfect for if you’re struggling to imagine the theme/lay out. Poster store have a wide variety of prints to suit your taste, including nature, illustrations, quotes and fashion. They also release a new poster collection every Tuesday! Not only are the images beautifully composed, all of their posters are printed on sustainably sourced high-quality paper.
The first image is the Poster Store One Line Art No1 Illustration. I have always loved and admired one line drawings, I think there’s something so beautiful about them. I selected the A4 size and went with an Oak Frame, to compliment my office interior.
The second image takes me to a place of tranquillity, if only I could teleport through the print! This is the Birds by the Beach poster. I adore spending time of the beach when on holiday, something which I haven’t done for a few years now. The sensation of warm sands in between my toes and the cooling sea breeze is my idea of bliss.
The final poster I chose is the Golden Moon Phases. I am obsessed with space and star gazing, so having a Moon print was an absolute must for me. This image encapsulates my personality, and makes my imagination go wild, with the wonders of our universe.
I had so much fun choosing the images on the Poster Store website, I think I genuinely spent hours deciding what I wanted. I am beyond happy with how the wall art has turned out, and would highly recommend using Poster Store to decorate your home. The prints and frames are affordable, yet excellent quality, with a wide variety of styles to choose from. Poster Store have kindly given me a discount code for you to go 55% off on all posters (except Selection Posters and frames). Use code: UNITLANOTHERDAY55 at checkout (not affiliate). Not combined with other discount campaigns. Valid until 10th January.
