If Valentine’s Day isn’t the perfect excuse to watch trashy rom-com movies then I really don’t know what is. Whether you’re looking for something to watch with your partner, or friends, this romance movie list should contain plenty of options to keep you entertained.
We all know that the 90’s was the best era for teen romance movies, they certainly don’t make movies like that anymore. As a 90’s baby myself, I love nothing more than to watch throwback chick flicks from the decade I was born. My romance movie guide will contain ALOT of 90’s and noughties classic movies.
Must-Watch Rom Com Movies
1. Clueless – 1995
If this movie doesn’t encapsulate the 90’s in 1hr 30mins then I don’t know what will, and if you have never seen it, then you’ve been living under a rock for the past 26 years! Clueless follows Cher, a teenager who is navigating adolescent problems. Cher is an absolute QUEEN and has the best fashion sense, I would still love to have that famous yellow blazer and skirt duo. The movie is hilarious and has plenty of laugh out moments…AS IF! I’ve watched Clueless countless times and it just never gets old, it is a timeless classic in my opinion.
2. 10 Things I Hate About You – 1999
I was introduced to this movie when I was 17, I genuinely couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of it until that point! Heath Ledger stars alongside Julia Stiles in this romantic comedy that will leave an unforgettable imprint in your mind. I love this movie so much, not just because Heath Ledger was casted. I won’t give anything away, because you truly need to sit down and watch for yourself.
3. How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days – 2003
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are the main protagonists in this delightful rom-com. Wikipedia’s brief overview of the movie doesn’t give too much away, but with all rom-coms you can figure out the plot within the first few minutes of the movie. “Benjamin is challenged by his co-workers to make a woman fall in love with him. On the other hand, Andie has to write an article on how to lose a man in 10 days.” There are plenty of laugh out loud moments in this one, I think it would be the perfect watch on Valentine’s Day.
4. Valentine’s Day – 2010
How could I write a Valentine’s movie guide and not include the actual film Valentine’s Day. This movie has a star studded cast, including, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Gardiner, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway and Taylor Swift, with some other big names making an appearance too. “On Valentine’s Day, several couples face struggles related to their love lives while others try their best to find love. However, they try to overcome the challenges to make things work.” I really like this movie, I think it’s the perfect film to watch as a couple. It has it’s classic rom-com cheesiness, but I think the male population might appreciate this more than some of the other movies I’ve mentioned.
5. Romeo and Juliet – 1996
I must admit, the last time I watched Romeo and Juliet was back in School for my GCSE’s. I won’t bore you with the details because everyone knows the storyline. Baz Luhrmann’s modern take on Romeo and Juliet is a movie masterpiece, the only thing I don’t like is that the script is spoken in Shakespearean English, making it rather difficult to follow. That being said, the movie is trying to play homage to the plays original roots, whilst also keeping up with modern times.
6. The Fault in Our Stars – 2014
Of course you will have heard of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The movie staring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort is a heart wrenching tear jerker, that follows two teenagers with cancer. Although a morbid story, the way the characters love for each other blossoms throughout the movie is so romantic. If you plan to watch it this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to stock up on the tissues!
7. The Shape of Water – 2017
I went to see The Shape of Water with my boyfriend when it was out on the cinema. I wasn’t expecting to like it, but it turned out to be one of the best movies I’d seen, and my boyfriend completely agrees. The story follows ‘Elisa, a lonely janitor, stumbles upon an amphibious creature that is held captive in a secret research facility. She then develops a unique relationship with the creature.‘ It’s a romance/fantasy film which will captivate you from the get go.
8. Twilight – 2008
Another movie which I haven’t watched since I was a teenager, but one I might actually re-watch, especially since the whole movie franchise is on Netflix. If you didn’t already know, Twilight is a vampire/romance movie, that “focuses on the development of a personal relationship between teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and the subsequent efforts of Edward and his family to keep Bella safe from a separate group of hostile vampires”
9. Me Before You – 2016
Another tear jerker, but a movie that’s certainly worth watching. Based on the novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes, Louisa (Emila Clarke) takes on a new role caring for Will (Sam Claflin), a paralysed man. Their relationship soon blossoms into something beautiful. I went to see this in the cinema and sobbed my heart out!
10 – The Titanic – 1997
Why do I keep recommending movies that are going to make you cry, I’m not trying to make you sad, I promise!! The Titanic is of course a classic romance movie. Set aboard the doomed ship, the story follows Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) who form an unlikely romance. Jack and Rose are from different social classes, and at the time, it was frowned upon to fall in love outside of your own class, what a strange era!! I got to see this movie for the first time at the pictures, it was re-realised for either it’s 10th or 15th anniversary.
And so there you have it, my recommendations for the best romance movies to watch on Valentine’s Day as a couple. I really hope you like the movies that I’ve selected, I’m desperate to re-watch some of these cult classic movies now, especially 10 Things I Hate About You. If you like movie guides, I have a bunch of others on the blog, ranging from horror, Christmas movies, and even Disney+ recommendations. I always enjoy creating posts like these, as it allows me to reminisce on my favourite films. What are your favourite romance movies? I’d love to know!
Until Another Day x
