How to Stay Motivated During Winter

*Guest post by The Kelly Diane Report*

Winter can be such a difficult time of year. Whilst some people love it, others find it really difficult. You’ve taken all the Christmas decorations down and your house feels bare. Its cold and often wet and windy too. The mornings and evenings are dark and it feels like it doesn’t really get light during the day either. With all of this, motivation levels can be low.

All you probably want to do is stay in your pyjamas, watching movies all day whilst snuggled under a blanket. If this is you, I want to try and help you. Because as much as a movie day would be lovely, you will find that you begin to struggle as the jobs start to pile up. I’ve put together some tips to hopefully help you stay motivated during winter.

Get out of bed as soon as you wake up

As soon as you wake up in the morning, get yourself out of bed and get dressed. If you stay under those warm covers, scrolling social media, you will probably still be there an hour later. Whereas if you are up and dressed, you are straight away one step closer to getting things done.

Go for a walk

Where possible, get out for a brisk morning walk. Its such a great way of starting your day and can put you in such a good mood. It will also ensure that you are now wide awake and ready to start your day. If the weather doesn’t appeal to you, do a home workout instead. There are so many options available on YouTube, so create a playlist and choose one to do each day.

Make a to-do list

I live by to-do lists and each morning, I make a conscious effort to get everything written down. Its such a great way of brain dumping and being able to have a clear head. I jot them down roughly, before adding them in a priority order. Its then so much easier to work your way through that list and in theory, you won’t be putting off those important tasks.

Fill a bottle of water & create a snack basket

We should all be drinking plenty of water, which we all know, so I won’t list all the benefits in this post. However, filling your bottle and taking it around with you, will motivate you to drink more. You will be surprised at just how much you drink. I’d also recommend creating a small snack basket with your snacks for the day. If you are stricter with yourself and limit how much you snack, it will stop you feeling more sluggish.

Take short breaks regularly

I work by the rule of for every 45 minutes I do some work, whether around the house or on my laptop, I take a 5 minute break. This can be something as simple as going to the toilet or even just dancing around to my favourite song. It just has to be something that will give my mind a break from what I’m doing, like a refresh button. In the past, I’ve fallen into that pattern where my “break” has been 2 hours where I have done nothing but procrastinate and I end up feeling so unmotivated. Therefore, limiting yourself to 5 minute breaks throughout the day will help you get that to-do list done.

Switch off

So many people have found themselves working from home and so you no longer have that work/life divide. During your working day, switch off those private notifications. You don’t need to see if Joe Bloggs is doing yet another Instagram live or if Fred’s child has become an artist with another painting masterpiece. If your notifications aren’t there to tempt you to scroll, you will get so much more done. Likewise, if your working hours are 9-5, switch off from work at 5pm. Don’t be tempted to carry on working because you will now be eating into your home life. It’s now the time to create something delicious for tea and have a relaxing evening.

About the Author

Hello, I’m Kelly from The Kelly Diane Report and I’m so happy to be able to write this guest post for Kelly. I’ve run my blog on and off for over 10 years and focus mainly on books, beauty and lifestyle content. Over the years, I have found that I’ve struggled with staying motivated, especially during the winter months. I hope these tips have given you some ideas of how you too can stay motivated this winter. There are so many other tips I could share with you but I don’t want to make this post any longer. A huge thank you to Kelly for allowing me to guest post and a big thank you to you for reading.

  1. I love the winter, but I do find it harder to motivate myself to do things – especially when it’s dark in the mornings. I find it hard to get up early. These ideas are really helpful – I especially like the idea of creating a snack basket! xx

  2. Great tips! Getting up straight away can feel so hard in the moment but it definitely makes the day easier. I have insomnia and tend to be my best at night so having fewer daylight hours actually really helps me be productive in winter (unless I’m trying to take photos) x

  3. I’ve never really thought about it before but feeling unmotivated in the winter is definitely something I relate too. I agree, getting up asap is a huge help, along with getting dressed/having a shower straight away. Having a to-do list helps me so much all year round too x
