It is spooky season! October is well and truly in full swing, so it is time to have a fright fest and binge watch some horror movies. If you are a scary movie fiend, then you have probably watched all of these films multiple times, but for those of you that haven’t, here is my guide to the best Halloween Horrors you need to watch this autumn!
Supernatural Horror Movies
The Conjuring 1 & 2
In my opinion, The Conjuring movies are by far one of the best modern day horror series out there. Based off of the true cases investigated by Ed & Lorraine Warren, who were Paranormal Investigators in the late 1900’s. ‘The Conjuring’ features the story of a family who moved into a large farmhouse in the 1970’s (known as the Amityville Horror). Within the first few nights of living here, a number of paranormal events occur, prompting the family to call upon Ed & Lorraine to investigate these strange happenings.
The second in the series is set in London in 1977 (known as the Enfield Haunting). Similar to the first movie, a family begin to experience multiple paranormal happenings in their home. Featuring ouija boards, possessions and multiple jump scares, this movie is sure to leave you hiding behind a cushion for its entirety.
You’ll be pleased to know a thrid installment is due in 2021. I have my fingers crossed that this stays to its release schedule, unlike the latest fiasco with James Bond.
The Nun
The Nun is a spin off from The Conjuring 2, and follows a nun (obviously), at the Saint Cartha’s monastery in 1952 Romania, as she uncovers an unholy secret. I’m going to keep this brief because I do not want to give away any spoilers, but this is such a freaky, scary film that left me absolutely terrified.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
This was a recent watch for me, although not terrifying like the previous films, it’s definitely worth a watch this Halloween. The story begins with a group of friends who break into an empty haunted house. Rumour has it that a young girl (Sarah Bellows) was locked away in the house by her family. Upon exploration of the deralict property, they discover a hidden chamber, where the main antogonist (Stella) finds a book of creepy stories, supposedly written by Sarah. Stella secretly takes the book home with her. Shortly afterwards a new story appears in the book, written in blood, followed by a series of strange events.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
For some reason The Exorcism of Emily Rose has a rating of only 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story follows an ambitious lawyer who takes on the case of Father Richard Moore, a priest who is being charged for negligent homicide following an exorcism of a young student, Emily Rose. Throughout the movie, you will be transported back in time to the events leading up to the failed exorcism. There are plenty of jump scares throughout, I was too frightened to leave the bedroom after watching this movie!
Annabelle
I’m sure you have all heard of this movie before! The famous story of the possessed doll Annabelle. I’m not going to go into much detail here because this post will be 1 million years long! Annebelle is also part of the Conjuring series, loosely based around the paranormal investigations of Ed & Lorraine Warren.
Slasher/Gore Movies
Halloween
How could I put together a list of horror movies without including Halloween. If you haven’t watched Halloween before, then you NEED to set some time aside this October, to dive into the world of Mike Myers. The tale begins with a six year old Mike Myers murdering his older sister with a kitchen knife, before being imprisoned in a Psychiatric Sanitarium. Fifteen years later, Mike returns to his home town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to continue what he started. Staring a young Jamie Lee Curtis, this is one of my favourite classic horrors. There are a number of Halloween movies after the first, but I have never watched them. However 30 years after the original, Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her role as Laurie Strode to take Mike Myers head on. I really enjoyed this movie, in my opinion it was just as good, if not better than the original!
From here on out, I’m going to list my final Halloween horror movies otherwise we will be here for days!
- The Final Destination Series
- SAW Series
- The Evil Dead
Thrillers
- Hush
- The House at the End of the Street
- Split
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Get Out
- Us
- Don’t Breathe
Zombie/Monster Horrors
- 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
- IT Chapters 1 & 2
- Jeepers Creepers
- World War Z
- Cloverfield
- A Quiet Place
I’d love to know what your favourite horror movies are, and if you have any recommendations that I haven’t already mentioned. Hopefully over the coming years, once the world gets back to normal, there will be some new horrors to dive head first in to! If you loved this post I have my Top 10 Christmas Movies on the blog too. Great informative post. I think the scariest movie that I can deal with was Get Out and Skeleton key. There was one more thriller but I seriously can’t remember the name. I haven’t watched it in ages

This is the kind of movie list that I can get behind! I LOVE horror movies and could watch them ALL the time. So, it’s super exciting to see everyone else getting behind them this time of year. My husband and I try to stick to only horror movies throughout the month of October as one of the ways that we celebrate the season, and there are always more movies that we want to watch than there is time to watch them – even now with COVID keeping us home!
